Objective and primary question:
The objective of this fundamental study is to assess the clinical and biological changes, namely histological, immunological (level of MMP-8), and microbial composition around the implant and the adjacent tooth/teeth following the placement of the first implant in the mouth of patients with treated (history of) periodontitis compared to patients without a history of periodontitis.
The primary question to be answered in the study is "how and why do patients with a history of periodontitis are at a greater risk to develop peri-implantitis than patients without a history of periodontitis?"
